City Of Edinburgh Council

The BusTracker project was started by City of Edinburgh Council in 2002 with the aim of providing accurate and reliable real-time passenger information for bus services across the City.

Working closely with Lothian Buses and First Edinburgh, the City Council developed and agreed a detailed system specification. After an exhaustive tender process, the City Council awarded the project to Ineo Systrans, an established supplier of real-time passenger information and fleet management systems.

The City Council still maintains overall responsibility for the BusTracker Project but it remains a close-working partnership with Ineo and Lothian Buses, the only bus operator running “live” in the system at the moment.

The City Council is directly responsible for:

§          delivery of real-time bus information through the BusTracker signs on-street and in key locations like Ocean Terminal and the Cameron Toll Shopping Centre

§          development and delivery of the BusTracker web-site and mobile services

§          delivering bus priority at traffic signals using the BusTracker system

§          encouraging other bus operators to join the BusTracker system to increase the benefits to the travelling public

§          encouraging businesses to provide BusTracker information in the workplace through real-time signs and intranet facilities

§          working with neighbouring authorities to provide BusTracker signs on routes in East Lothian, Midlothian and West Lothian where BusTracker equipped buses are delivering the service

§          integrating BusTracker with other information systems e.g rail, airports, TravelineScotland etc

§          delivering audio and text based services for travellers with a disability

Lothian Buses

Lothian Buses have been pro-active members of the BusTracker project since the beginning and played a significant role in the development of the system specification.

Lothian Buses recognised that BusTracker’s advanced fleet management tools could help improve the real-time management of their fleet and the service delivered to their customers. The fleet management system also includes security features to enhance the safety of both the driver and their passengers.

Due to the success of the BusTracker system, Lothian Buses are now committed to equipping their whole fleet of approximately 600 vehicles. Over 500 buses have already been equipped. In addition, BusTracker already holds the details of all Lothian Bus services.

The BusTracker web site and mobile phone service will therefore soon be able to provide real-time passenger information for all Lothian Bus services at every bus stop they use across Edinburgh and the Lothians. This is only achievable because Lothian Buses can reliably and accurately track their buses throughout the day.

Lothian Buses are directly responsible for:

-          funding the installation of BusTracker and subsequent expansion across their bus fleet

-          loading and updating the Lothian Bus service details on the BusTracker system database

-          ensuring that the BusTracker systems (on buses and in bus depots) are monitored and maintained to deliver high quality real-time information and fleet management services
